Helene is a ceramicist of French origin who creates quirky raku fired pieces reminiscent of Purbeck. Corfe Castle Herdwick sheep, the castle itself and unsual functional items are but a few examples of her humorous works.
A founder member of Purbeck New Wave Gallery during her time living in Rempstone near Studland, she moved back to France last year.
Raku fired stoneware is sculpted clay with uneven glazing applied, which is fired in a kiln. The brittle piece is then put in a bonfire. The glazed areas then crackle whilst the unglazed parts turn a charcoal black. Although highly skilled, there is a strong element of surprise in the final product.
